Analyst Report: CVNA
1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Carvana rose 15.68% to $68.31 on Thursday 29 October 2026, the first full session after record third-quarter results released after the close on 28 October. Retail units reached 217,385 (+39% year on year) and revenue $8.040 billion (+42%), per the company, while management said full-year adjusted EBITDA would land at the higher end of its $2.7–3.0bn range. Morgan Stanley named the stock a Top Pick the same day, which gave the rally a second driver. Gross profit per unit fell and EPS of $0.39 trailed the roughly $0.44 expected (Stocktwits, unconfirmed against the primary release), so the market paid for volume growth and the raised EBITDA outlook. Volume of 23,205,900 was 2.89x the 50-session average. The stock still sits below its 200-day average, and the removal of numeric guidance from 2027 leaves the next leg dependent on execution.
2. THE CATALYST
Carvana published its Q3 2026 results after the close on 28 October (Stockhouse, 2026-10-28). The 29 October session was the first to trade on them, and the stock closed at $68.31 against $59.05 the day before.
| Metric | Result | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Retail units | 217,385 (+39% YoY), record | Carvana Newsroom |
| Total revenue | $8.040bn (+42% YoY), record | Carvana Newsroom |
| Net income | $483m (+$220m YoY) | Carvana release |
| Adjusted EBITDA | $800m (+$163m), record | Carvana release |
| EPS | $0.39 vs about $0.44 expected | Stocktwits |
| Total gross profit per unit | $6,997 (down $365) | TIKR |
| Gross margin | 18.9% vs 20.3% | TIKR |
| Retail gross profit per car | $3,556 (up $100) | TIKR |
Carvana expects Q4 retail units to rise sequentially and full-year adjusted EBITDA at the higher end of its range, as long as the environment stays stable (Stockhouse). TIKR attributes the lower gross profit per unit mainly to lower loan rates offered to buyers. Carvana cited fuel prices and rising benchmark rates as headwinds, which TIKR puts at about $200 a car. Stocktwits ties part of the EPS shortfall to a one-time debt-related charge. Simply Wall St also reported a miss without figures, and the EPS numbers are not confirmed against the primary release.
Morgan Stanley's Andrew Percoco raised the stock to Top Pick on 29 October, keeping Overweight and the $88 target (GuruFocus; Stocktwits). TIKR's mid-session piece cited a gain of +9%, and the close of +15.68% supersedes it.
Other analyst actions that day (Stocktwits unless noted):

| BTIG | Target to $82 from $87, Buy, citing heavier vehicle operations, overhead and advertising costs |
| Needham | Target to $100 from $120, Buy, citing a lower earnings multiple amid higher interest rates |
| Jefferies | Reiterated Buy on market share gains (headline only, target not seen; Investing.com) |
3. COMPANY PROFILE
Carvana, based in Tempe, Arizona and founded in 2012, runs an e-commerce platform for buying and selling used cars. It handles vehicle acquisition, inspection and reconditioning, financing, complementary products, logistics, fulfilment and post-sale support, and it also operates auction sites. It sits in Consumer Cyclical (Auto & Truck Dealerships), with a market cap of $75.72bn, a forward P/E of 30.2 and a trailing P/E of 32.8. CarMax is its most visible competitor in the brief.
Carvana says it gained share while the broader used-car market was roughly flat (Carvana release). From 2027 it reports on a GAAP basis and stops quarterly and annual guidance after the Q4 call (TIKR).
4. DEEP DIVE ANALYSIS
Do fundamentals justify the move? Unit growth of 39% and revenue growth of 42% in a flat market, together with a record $800m of adjusted EBITDA and a full-year range pushed to its upper end, give a reasonable basis for a re-rating from $59.05. Lower gross profit per unit and the EPS shortfall (Stocktwits) were accepted by buyers, probably because the margin pressure came mostly from lower loan rates offered to customers rather than weaker demand. That reading is inference. Retail gross profit per car rose $100, which supports it.
Peers. TIKR reads the share gains as coming from rivals such as CarMax, which grew comparable used units 13% but cut retail gross profit per used car by $111 to win sales. Lithia's used retail gross profit per unit rose 11%, so the margin pressure does not appear to be industry-wide (TIKR). AZO fell 0.62% and ORLY fell 2.62% over the same period, and the brief offers no explanation for the gap; both are parts retailers with a different demand profile, which is inference. The S&P 500 fell 0.30%.
Comparable episode. After the Q2 report on 29 July, record revenue and EBITDA met disappointing full-year guidance, and the stock fell on 30 July (Yahoo Finance put the drop at about 11%; CNBC gave different intraday figures, which the brief leaves unresolved). Morgan Stanley and BTIG cut targets to $90 and $87 that day (Benzinga). This quarter reverses that pattern, with guidance pointing up. Stocktwits described the gain as the best day since late July 2025.
Bull case. Share gains continue, Q4 units rise sequentially, EBITDA lands at the top of the range, and Morgan Stanley's $88 target (about 29% above the close, my calculation) becomes a reference point. Needham's $100 and BTIG's $82 targets, both with Buy ratings, sit above the close.
Bear case. Gross profit per unit fell $365 and margin slipped 1.4 points. BTIG flagged heavier operating, overhead and advertising costs, Needham flagged a lower multiple under higher rates, and Bank of America's $72 target with a Neutral rating sits only about 5% above the close (my calculation). The end of numeric guidance reduces visibility just as the multiple depends on delivery.
5. TECHNICAL SNAPSHOT
The close of $68.31 is above the 50-day average of $65.86 and below the 200-day average of $69.30, so the stock has cleared the first and sits just under the second. It trades 29.9% below the 52-week high of $97.38 (23 January) and 25.4% above the low of $54.46 (30 March). The session range ran from $63.81 to $69.23, and the stock closed near the top of it. Volume of 23,205,900 was 2.89x the 50-session average, and the prior session's 16,823,200 was already elevated. The nearest support is the prior close of $59.05, with the 26 October close of $56.61 below it. The 200-day average at $69.30, which also sits just above the session high of $69.23, is the nearest resistance.
6. RISK FACTORS
- Margin compression: gross profit per unit fell $365, and further cuts in loan rates offered to buyers would extend that.
- Cost growth: BTIG cited heavier vehicle operations, overhead and advertising costs.
- Rates and fuel: Carvana named both as Q3 headwinds, and Needham links them to a lower multiple.
- Reduced visibility: guidance ends after the Q4 call and reporting moves to GAAP from 2027.
- Competition: CarMax is trading margin for volume (TIKR).
- Unresolved data: the EPS figures come from Stocktwits and are not confirmed in the primary release.
Dated catalysts: CarMax's Strategic Update on 3 November, with its December report to follow, which TIKR says will show whether CarMax is taking share from Carvana. Carvana's Q4 report is expected in early 2027 with no confirmed date.
7. ACTIONABLE OUTLOOK
Short term (1-2 weeks): The stock has gained 16.33% in five sessions and trades at the 200-day average. The CarMax update on 3 November is the main scheduled read-across. Holding above the $65.86 50-day average would keep the move intact, and a return towards $59.05 would erase the earnings reaction.
Medium term (1-3 months): Evidence of sequential unit growth and stable gross profit per unit would support the Morgan Stanley and Needham views. Further margin erosion would favour the BTIG and Bank of America cautions. CarMax's December report will show how aggressively it prices for share.
Long term: The thesis of share gains in used cars is supported by 39% unit growth in a flat market. The change in reporting from 2027 raises the bar for management, because investors will rely on reported results rather than guidance. This is analysis, not personal financial advice.
